Are you me? My PhD and postdoc was not very proximal to the group i joined. Some groups value that breadth of knowledge and want diverse perspectives on a range of subject areas, ie combat group think. Also, part of your value and transferable skills as a PhD is the value to learn just about anything, and quickly, the ability to synthesize disparate sources of information into something actionable.

This makes me a bit angry that a highly relevant Undergrad and Master with independent research, original work publishing, and job experience puts someone immediately lower than someone else who has a PhD except no domain knowledge or industry experience. Don’t want to turn this into putting anyone down or a competition, but for me, reading this fucking sucks because how hard it is to be hired as a scientist when someone like this can just waltz into it. Literally just yesterday I was reading postings for scientist positions that wanted the following:

I’m sorry that it makes you angry. I was in a similar position. I had experience and publications relevant to a different industry, and my old boss pushed me to go get a PhD. I graduated and can’t even get a job using anything I learned, timing didn’t work out and now I’m squeezed out possibly forever. I couldn’t even apply to BS/MS level jobs, I literally get auto rejected. I’m not convinced that the state of PhD training is any less exploitative. I applied to almost a hundred places post graduation and pivoted really hard, went to my school career services, cold contacted people for informational interviews, rewrote my resume for every position. I had no idea what kind of job I was going to get, I just applied to anything that could even sound relevant, hoping someone could see something in me.
