Questions about hosting a television time capsule
tl:dr - trying to recreate about 48 hours of “live” tv from the mid 90’s to run as an app
OK, so for background, I’ve got a couple of AWS and digital ocean instances which I set up without assistance and use to run backend web apps and my e-commerce websites…. modest technical knowledge but with about 90% of that coming from stackoverlfow and the like.
I am working on a personal passion project to create a TV time capsule of sorts and would love general or specific feedback! Here’s what I’ve got so far:
1) I’m going through archives to download all the video footage to be used. It’s about 48 hours of video for each channel, with the goal of having at least 10 channels = 480hr minimum (at the original a/v quality)
2) on cloud infrastructure, deploy jellyfin? Or maybe just a simple media player to serve up the stitched together channel footage
3) “channel changer” app which will do a few functions- select channel (video file) based on user input, and start at a certain timestamp (based on time of day) which will just loop whenever it reaches the end
4) hardware of a raspberry pi with an IR remote to handle the channel change function and output the client video via rca/vga to the crt tv
I feel like I’m probably missing some critical points, especially around the best way to serve up the video footage from the server quickly. Initially, this will only be serving 3 to 5 client machines, but eventually it may expand much higher.
Whew thanks for reading! Gotta get back to punching holes on my LightBright..
