I hate how they made Shithood Friend Complex this big when it doesn't deserve
Incoming rant/vent ahead. If you're a fan, you'll probably be pissed with me, so just ignore the post.
Ever since webtoon decided to release this thing on eng server, I'd see a lot of readers speaking positively about it, despite the way it was poorly censored. In a first glance, I had a feeling it wouldn't be all that, but I decided to check it out since I didn't want to judge something I haven't read by myself. And well, I was right.
Just a disclaimer, I didn't read the censored version on Webtoon. I read by an alternative source which keeps everything. So my judgement wasn't affected by whatever that was cut.
First of all, it's a very predictable webtoon. I've seen a lot of complaining about webtoons being all the same (which I personally don't agree), but if we have conveniently attractive MCs, it suddenly doesn't matter anymore. Everything that happens there you can see from a mile away, and even readers who are fond of it have already predicted how the whole upcoming season will be. The MCs also did a good work on being annoying, how can you expect me to believe they're on their 20s when they act like whiny and teenagers all the time? I get that you're not supposed to be the pinnacle of maturity at 20, but I've seen literal teen characters being more well written than those two, I'm not even kidding. The whole "they're so crazy I love them" gimmick gets really tiring after a few episodes. The FL carries an "I'm not like the other girls" outdoor with flashlights (at least she has female friends, so she's not a pick me), while the dollar store bakugo ML is barely a character at all. He's constantly horny, is big, something happened in his past, that's it. And I feel one of the reasons this webtoon is so defended is merely because of him, because he's hot, and the ones who like to self insert as the FL. And don't even get me started on the body proportions because that's a subject that's talked to death here.
Maybe I'm way too old to the whole 2000s ecchi humor they attempt to do, but talk about something that's cringe and forced. And it's particularly funny when they attempt to take sexy shots of the FLs rear, which is almost negative. Like… what am I supposed to look at here? Should I bring a microscope?
And nitpick, but I hate the way the eyes are drawn here, and I'm very used to the usual animesque artstyle. The eyes are way too big and make all the characters, especially the female ones, look like bugs. It's very uncanny, just like the big ass feet as well.
About the smut scenes… which is something that naturally bring a lot of readers. They attempt to be something between hot and relatable™, and for me, they end up being neither, just cringe. The characters are cringe most of the time, so I suppose there's not that much that could be done here. Not to mention they have moments where one of them would ask the other to stop, but they'd continue, which gives me the ick. It happened with both of them.
Something that I think it's poor writing, but it's not exclusive to this webtoon, is the way all the characters who show interest in either of them end up being the worst people possible >! We've had a misogynistic harasser, a manipulative bitch, and the sunbae. I still can't understand why a lot of readers hate the latter so much, though. Besides being the second ML, which is something that already gets a lot of hate, people hate him for having casual sex (in a webtoon where casual sex is basically the main plot), for liking the FL (can't blame him for having bad taste, tho), and for enjoying bdsm. I don't understand why the last one is an issue, though, since it's shown that everything he does is consensual, and he never intentionally hurt anyone. A lot of comments where I read seem to be made by underage people, which make him having fetishes as something equivalent to being an abuser.!< I really dislike the way they do this whole "MCs good, not MCs bad" thing. Especially in real life settings, it just feels lazy.
Also, I think a few people will agree with me on this one, but >! the 'love triangle with an obvious endgame' route they're seemingly aiming for is just as a cheap excuse to make drama. It could've ended peacefully in just one season. !<
I don't understand why the fans of this webtoon are so pressed with anyone who criticizes it. When that controversy about the author sparkled, a lot of people would defend it, no matter what. And it's something I don't think is that necessary. Just a quick search and you can find countless webtoons that do the same this one tries to do, in all aspects, but miles better. Sometimes, it feels like those readers are reading a smut for the first time and think it's the thing, when it's not that good and unique. Doesn't help that pretty much all the comments I see on its chapter comment sessions looks like it's made by underage readers. Of course, I know not everyone who like it acts like this, and there are chill readers who just enjoy, without being rabid. And that's completely okay. I have nothing against who likes it without treating others badly because of this.
>! I don't have a solid opinion about the controversy, though, but I do think the author acted a bit bitchy there. I don't think the evidences were solid enough to prove plagiarism, but she didn't need to act like she acted. Just my two cents. !<
I've read the whole thing until the last chapter, and now it's on hiatus. Why do I keep reading something I dislike so much, then? Who knows? They do say hate is just another side of the coin for love. Maybe I'm just willing to see how much they're going to piss me off haha
Anyway, that's it. Feel free to agree or disagree with me as much as you want, I just needed to take this off my chest. Have a good day ✌🏽
