Old, calming book?

I am looking for a novel or novels written in a previous century that are soothing and not intense or scary. Something to read while curled up on the couch with a cup of hot tea. I started reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo and I liked the tone of his writing and how cozy the narration felt, but obviously that book has some serious subject matter and is kind of intense. He has a way of inviting the reader to come along with him and explore the setting and the characters, and feels kind of gentle in those moments (when he wants to be). I don't think I would mind if the plot wasn't fast-paced or there were tangents, which seems to be common in books from the 1800s. Extra points if the book is a classic that is famous or gets read in English class (though I have no preference on the original language of the book.)
