2025 SFSS Elections | Jeffrey Collinson for VP Internal!
Hey everyone! I'm Jeffrey, one of the VP Internal candidates this term!
I'm running for this position because during my time as the Geography Councillor I've found a few issues in the SFSS that I'd really like to change and I have some ideas to fix them, namely:
- Lack of Work Reports and Minutes Being Posted
- How I'd Fix It
- Figure out what's going on to block these from being shared, and actually say something if they're delayed!
- How I'm Working on It Now
- Drafting a Council motion to mandate their posting by the end of the term
- How I'd Fix It
Lack of Education about What We Actually Do and How We Do It
- How I'd Fix It
- Videos about Society Policies, if it doesn't encroach on unionised work
- How I'm Working on It Now
- Sharing detailed notes with my DSUs about Council meetings (they have my personal thoughts so I shouldn't share them 😭), and explaining Council/SFSS business if there's questions
- How I'd Fix It
Distribution of Stipend
- How I'd Fix It
- Stipends of all elected persons ought to be linked to hours actually worked. May cause sitting Councillors to leave or report work that really shouldn't qualify though
- How I'm Working on It Now
- I'm guilty of not meeting my hours for my role, but I don't have any direction on what I should be doing. Executives don't ask for assistance except for 1-2 days every few months. I could be better by actively emailing the Executive team, but it should be an active outreach process by our leaders.
- How I'd Fix It
Vacant Seats
- How I'd Fix It
- I'm not sure what the VP Internal has done to fill the plethora of vacant seats this year, but, emailing and attending those union meetings sounds like a good thing to do if I were elected.
- How I'm Working on It Now
- I don't think there's much to do on this as an ordinary Councillor
- How I'd Fix It
Outdated Policy
- How I'd Fix It
- This might be getting better now, but I haven't seen much work done throughout the year on updating or maintaining current SFSS Policy.
- How I'm Working on It Now
- This is fully led by the VP Internal and Staff so I can't do much about it on my own, but I find it fun to comment on and participate with the proposals they send our way
- How I'd Fix It
Executive Misconduct
- How I'd Fix It
- Ensure the smooth functioning of the Oversight Committee by monitoring quorum, assist the chair with removing inactive members
- How I'm Working on It Now
- Built a sheet to summarize Fall Kickoff overspend (might be too inaccurate to share publicly), catalogued Executive Incidents (though it's hard when their meeting link and minutes are private - public committee links seems like a good thing to do, too). I am also in the Governance Committee and currently seeing what can be done about the Executives' self-reimbursement in our current policy review cycle
- How I'd Fix It
I've got a really simple agenda, and that is to focus on keeping the Society running smoothly so the other people you vote for can do their thing! I feel as if VP Internal elects and candidates can get a little carried away in trying to solve external issues while being an Internal role, which means that nothing gets done :(
Any questions/comments about me, the SFSS, or the election would be appreciated, thank you! :)
