Do I really need an SUV in KSA?

Moving to Dhahran in a few months from abroad and I’m car shopping right now. Expect to take weekend trips to Bahrain but otherwise don’t expect to drive more than just to work and daily life places. I keep hearing an SUV is a must in KSA but I’m not sure if I should believe it. Thoughts?
