My house burnt down. How do I keep valuables safe from fire and flooding?

Long time lurker here and I am hoping to take this mess and work it right this time. My house (my parents actually, college student here) decided to catch fire and the main floor is toast and the basement is flooded a bit.

Regarding valuables, photos/memories, and the like, what is the best way to keep them safe from fire and water?

For saving photos and other things digitally, how do I go about making sure I have multiple copies and where should they be kept?

Any advice for storage of stuff and ways to avoid any water damage or fire damage is appreciated. I want to start anew with a smart outlook.
