Can J1 Visa Holders Take a Second Job?

Is it possible to take on a second job, like a part-time position, while on a J1 visa? I’ve noticed that many people I know who hold touristt visas manage to work during their stay and make the most of the six months they’re allowed. Just wondering how it works for J1 visa holders!
