Strix 4090 Black Screen GPU Fans Full Speed Issues
Hello everyone and I hope you're all doing well. Two weeks ago I built a new PC. My specs are the following.
Intel Core i9-13900K | ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme Motherboard | ROG Ryujin II 360 ARGB AIO Cooler | ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC Graphics Card | Corsair Dominator Platinum 128GB DDR5 DRAM | Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD 2TB x3 | Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD 1TB x2 | ROG Thor 1200W Platinum II PSU
As stated above I built it just over two weeks ago and for the first week everything was running perfectly with zero problems. The Strix 4090 just ran any game I threw at it like butter with amazing performance. On week two I had my first issue. I powered on my computer like I do everyday and launched Steam to play a game.
The game starts normally and in less than 3 minutes my display goes black and the GPU fans go full speed however I could still hear the game audio in the background and my keyboard, mouse, and PC RGB were all still running. The GPU fans were literally spinning so hard I jumped out of my skin the first time it happened and it would not stop until I held the power button down for 5 seconds to hard shut down.
Now initially I thought to myself that was strange and one minute later I power the computer back on and loaded up the game again to see if I would get the same result but I didn't. The game ran perfectly fine all night long with no issues, stutters or FPS drops. In fact it ran just like a 4090 should.
Next day and the same problems again but now they are happening with more frequency. My motherboard has the latest bios, I attempted to roll Windows 11 back to the previous version to no avail. The issue persists on Windows 11 versions 22H1 and 22H2. I also ran DDU in safe mode to completely uninstall the NVIDIA drivers and attempted to use other Nvidia driver versions all with the same results of the black screen and GPU fans ramping up after launching a game.
I have literally reinstalled Windows 11 four times now via USB for a clean install which included wiping all drives and it keeps happening. I'm not getting any error logs so I am unable to see why this is happening. Out of all the crashes I only got one BSOD and that was a WDF_VIOLATION with no additional information given however I believe that particular error is a Windows framework or driver issue. Next I opened up the case to check the 12VHPWR cable for any damage which is a CableMod 12VHPWR 12 PIN To 4x8 PCI-E adapter and the cable is in perfect condition.
There are no hard bends in the cable and my case is large enough to give it the room it needs. Now I have done some intensive research on this issue. You can simply Google "4090 Black screen fans full speed" and get a lot of results so I know I'm not the only one having this problem but no one seems to have found a reason why this is happening.
I was just hoping someone here could help me or at least put my problem out there so others can see it. I've been literally pulling my hair out trying to fix this issue and I can't so I think I should wait for a new Nvidia driver update or some other fix to come along because I really don't want to have the computer crashing like this especially when all the parts are brand new.
Thanks for reading and if you have a solution I would be forever grateful.
