Keep an aging star or not?

If you were a GM, would you keep your superstar like Kobe, Dirk, DWade until they retire? They will still win you some games, have enjoyable games, but you will no longer be contenders. Or would you just trade them while they still have value and go full rebuild mode for the next 2-3 years, hoping to be back in contention after?
