Why was Christian Bale so bad in newsies

I’m in a huge newsies phase right now so I was watching the original newsies and when I got to Santa Fe Christian Bales vocals are so bad?Like not even meh. He doesn’t have any passion intensity! It’s just someone talking with inflections.
