Trying to define all of the terminology around sequels
This is my attempt to define all the terminology around sequels. I've based them on how filmmakers describe their projects.
Original: The first (or only) film in a series.
Sequel: A continuation of an existing story. e.g. The Godfather 2 is a sequel to The Godfather.
Prequel: A continuation of an existing story set before the original. e.g. Exorcist: The Beginning is a prequel to The Exorcist.
Remake: A reproduction of an original film.Reimagining: A remake with at least one major central difference. e.g. The Magnificent Seven is a reimagining of Seven Samurai.
Reboot: Remaking or reimagining the first film in a series. e.g. The Amazing Spiderman is a reboot of the Spiderman franchise.
Soft Reboot/Legacy sequel: A sequel that begins a new storyline and allows for new audience members. e.g. Jurassic world is a soft reboot of the Jurassic Park movies.
Recalibration/Alternate Sequels: Sequels that ignore other sequels in the series. e.g. Halloween (2018) and Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later are both recalibrations of the Halloween series.
Spin-Offs: An original film that exists within the world of another film but is not a direct continuation of that story.
Paraquels/Sidequels: Sequels that occur at the same time as an earlier film. e.g. Lion King 1 1/2 is a paraquel to The Lion King.
Readaptation: A subsequent adaptation of non-film property. e.g. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is a readaptation of Roald Dahl's book of the same name.
Serial Films/Multi-part: Planned movie series that split their story over multiple films. Kill Bill Vol 2 isn't a sequel but the second part in a multi-part story.
Obviously, shades of grey exist. Is Back To The Future 3 a prequel? a sequel? Part of a multi-part story?
Are there any I have missed?
Any of the definitions need changing?
