Night Eating Syndrome is screwing me over
TL;DR I have it. It's derailing my progress and I can't figure out a solution. Seeking advice.
First of all, if you are going to offer advice, understand that this is not a matter of willpower, acceptance of hunger, or sleep hygiene.
Basically what goes on is that when I reduce calories (as I have been doing since July to the tune of a 40 lb loss), NES becomes a problem. The more weight I lose, the more of a problem it becomes. And now it brings migraines along with it.
Here's what happens: eat normally all day. (Anywhere from 500-1000 cal deficit.). Weigh everything as usual. Maybe exercise, always meditate, always keep a bedtime routine. Some nights, I fall asleep only to wake up a couple of hours later in an altered state I would liken to bring drunk. That kind of disinhibition. Eat probably a full meal's worth of calories. Sometimes more; my record is 1500 or so.
Wake up with a vague recollection, maybe a cereal box next to my bed. Try to figure out how many calories I ate. Log it.
I am already in mental health treatment, and I have been trying to apply those tools to this. 75% of the time that is unsuccessful because I can't wake myself up enough to overcome the disinhibition.
I take medication, but nothing I haven't taken before, and they are all weight neutral and sleep disturbance would be extremely rare with them. I don't drink or use any drugs.
Intermittent fasting: tried several different eating windows, and this failed too.
I've also tried "consequences" by logging what I ate at 3 am as food eaten that same day, so I have very little to eat if I continue getting up after midnight. This makes it worse and not better.
I've tried taking maintenance breaks. That failed. I've tried adjusting to a smaller deficit. Failed. I've tried just logging it for the previous day and proceeding as normal. Doesn't make a difference.
This happens three or four times a week. It's really getting in the way of the hard work I do.
So please. If you have any suggestions, make them here. I'm considering trying 5-HTP next, but haven't learned enough about it yet.
