With the revamped Lakers' post-Luka, I have a tough question to ask. Is the WCF the minimum barometer for this team? If not, what to make of Darvin Ham?
This team is definitely playing at the same or even above the level they were once they made changes in 2023 post-ASG. IIRC, the Lakers were 26-32 before the ASG and in 13th place. They made changes and went on a 17-7 run to finish 43-39 and grabbed the 7th seed. Obviously the record is entirely different now but that team post-ASG was playing at a very high level with great defense. Is it better than the current iteration? Up to you.
They went on to make the WCF after a very bleak-looking season. Led by Darvin Ham and the crew, they exceeded expectations that season, even though he was thoroughly disliked (and rightfully so for many reasons).
My question is, with this team, and JJ looking like a fantastic coach, does this all go out the window if they can't reach the WCF? What are your thoughts on Ham v JJ? I know their offence has completely changed and they play much better than DH-led teams, but this is a results based business.
Do the JJ-led Lakers have to make the WCF at a minimum to somewhat validate his season and invalidate Ham? Because the optics are easy:
One coach went to the WCF against the eventual champs
The other coach (who is considered widely better) couldn't do that with a comparative roster (or even better)
Thoughts?
