Pebbles, gone forever??

I was offered a new horse by some people, a herring, and its better then pebbles so id like to enjoy the better stats but if i cant get pebbles back again then i am not gonna accept it and reload, i want to know if i can swap out and get pebbles back later or is he gone for good now?
