Should handwriting look awful on the kindle scribe?

I bought a refurbished one from Amazon. No matter what I do my handwriting looks awful and really far from what it looks like on paper. Is this normal or is it possibly a damaged refurbished item? Also it marks the page when I’m close to it with my pen but not touching it. So I am unable to make any “clean” breaks between letters or words…
