Bryant furnace code 34 -> 14 help needed

Edit: Had a service tech out. It was the hot surface ignitor not performing like it did in it's younger days. He replaced it, $388 total.

My Bryant (natural gas from utility) has been in my home since it was built in 2005.

I've had it serviced a few times. Most recently a new blower motor and control board in winter of 2021. I also changed the condensate trap in Feb. 2022 because the old one was so gunked up that water wouldn't flow through.

It's currently failing to light sometimes. I believe this has happened a few times occasionally in years past. Now it's happening multiple times per day the last few days. Sometimes it lights with no problem, other times it errors out.

It'll try to light, spit out a code 34, try 3 more times, and if it doesn't light then go to a code 14. I'll then power off the unit and power on, and the furnace goes through the cycle again, sometimes lighting and sometimes not.

A few observations from the last 24 hours:

  • I've seen it light on the 4th attempt where the first 3 had failed.
  • I can see the hot surface ignitor getting red every attempt to light.
  • I once saw it light, then cut the gas a few seconds later.
  • Each time it tries to light, I can hear the gas valve clicking, as though it's working (properly, I'm not sure).
  • Yesterday was quite windy, but today not so much.

I have done:

  • unplugged all the tubes to the condensate trap to check for excess water. Got a few drops out of one, but nothing major. I didn't pull the trap and run water through it to check cleanliness - but it's less than one year old.
  • Removed and cleaned the flame sensor with a $1 bill. I did this after I saw it light and then cut the gas.
