Phillip Boykin's Legacy
I just wanted to send out a quick "thank you" to Phillip Boykin, who truly came to the rescue during this OBC run after such an unfortunate injury to the great Patrick Page.
After a bizarre merry-go-round of ticket swaps, returns, and giveaways, I was lucky enough to see both the pro-shot performance last Saturday and the final performance today. And I was so honoured to see Phillip in this role—it's such a nuanced performance. He plays Hades with more emotion and humanity than I've seen before (though I also love Patrick and Zachary James). He’s got some serious pipes, too, and adds terrific comic touches to the role. I can see why the feedback has been so overwhelmingly positive. Honestly, I’d struggle to think of another replacement actor or understudy who’s received this level of acclaim. It was a huge task, and he nailed it, turning fans' initial disappointment into delight.
To anyone who came hoping to see the full OBC and instead saw Phillip… CONGRATS!
You witnessed a Broadway icon—someone who undoubtedly has many great roles and awards ahead of him.
But what I really wanted to say is that Phillip Boykin now stands equally alongside Reeve, Eva, André, Patrick, and Amber as an all-time Hadestown legend.
I just wish they’d got him on film—it would be amazing to have the option to choose your Hades when streaming the pro-shot!
Anyway, thank you, Phillip! You saved the day, sir.
