Gerund Contraction
I'm working on a group project and a co-worker suggested a title that includes the word"Fishing"
. In an effort to make it more casual, we shortened it to the contraction Fishin'
but then it morphed further into Fish'n'
. (As in, She's my friend I go fish'n' with.
)
While I understand the thought process here (if you can replace a G
with an apostrophe, why can't you replace the preceding I
with an apostrophe as well), but as the writer in the group, this struck me as incorrect. I've never seen a gerund contraction written like that. I also believe that 'n'
is always a contraction for "and"
so this spelling is misleading.
Is there a rule for gerund contractions like this? Has anyone encountered a contraction like this? Do you think this would be confusing to the average English speaker, especially ESL speakers?
