Sane way to replace light w/ heavy fortification?

Is there any way to replace the light fortification walls with heavy ones w/o losing my sanity? I mean, all housing downgrades before I get the heavy fortification up. Ideally, I would use the connection points of my current gates for the heavy, but that means I need to delete the light one first, triggering said above.
