How would you "save" the franchise?

I've noticed lots of people complaining about William always coming back and the timeline getting too long and weird, plus I still don't understand what the mimic is and I don't get who even made the whole pizzaplex place and robots (if anybody knows, please enlighten me). So how would you change the franchise and which game would you consider the "downfall" or the last good game?
