Lotion gradients

I've looking at some of the descriptions about how to do lotion gradients, but am a bit confused. I've seen people say to use a sponge brush and layer it on. But I'm not clear if you are supposed to brush the lotion/dye mixture directly onto the disc or if you are brushing the lotion across a lotion bed. Any insights about this method would be greatly appreciated!
