Are People Really This Insensitive?

I was coming back from college to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus Metro Station when I saw a first-year kid on the skywalk having a seizure. He was lying on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth and his nose running. Some students were standing nearby, but what really shocked me was how so many others just walked past, casually laughing, like they did not just see a guy unconscious on the ground.

His phone was still unlocked, so I went to his quick dial and called his brother. Turns out, the guy had been in the hospital for a month and this was his first day back. He did not take his medicine, and now here we were. I stayed on call with his brother while we tried to wake him up. After a while, he regained consciousness, so I helped him to Durgabai Deshmukh Metro Station, sat him down, and bought him a Mosambi juice. His brother came all the way from Noida, wanted to pay me back, but obviously, I refused.

That was not the point.

The real question is, why are people so indifferent? How do you just ignore something like that?
