Key not working

Had the most horrible day yesterday evening; with no prior warning or any significant incident, my car key refused to work, replaced the battery and that didn’t fix it. My boss was nice enough to bring me home to get the spare which worked thankfully. Today I went to check my tyres at ATS and one of the guys mentioned I will have to reprogram the key. What does it even mean and why has the key suddenly stopped working?
