Genuine question for employees

Are you required/encouraged to constantly try to connect with customers? I was browsing the store for probably 15 minutes and was asked SEVEN TIMES if I needed a basket, and asked three times if I was still doing okay. I know Starbucks baristas are encouraged to "connect" with customers, so I step away and look at my phone while I wait for my drink because frankly, I'm not the engaging type :) Is B&BW the same?
