Post-binge review of Red Valley (highly recommended!)
Was recommended Red Valley audio drama yesterday, totally binged it yesterday (all 2.5 seasons plus two mini series). I’m sleep deprived and feeling it, but also feeling the satisfaction of coming across an emotionally taxing and fulfilling audio drama, that made me laugh too loud when I should be sleeping and want to cry.
Some of that was probably sleep deprivation, but it’s a state akin to the ordeals the characters face, so I feel oddly poised to write this review. Which could also be my starved brain cells talking.
The official synopsis of the audio drama is vague, but perhaps best positioned to describe itself here.
Genre is mystery bromance with extra dark humor, but also lots of nerd humor. Explores the limits of the psyche and science, tests friendships, marriages. Has a sympathy for the cold-hearted that is quite unique.
If I’m being vague I think maybe it’s better to go in blind so you’re surprised at how far the story develops.
What I really liked though was the mix of the extra dark, even heartless, with the extra warm, such as a deep friendship that often expresses itself in very inane conversations, such as about tv, board games, and the macabre.
Great storytelling, plot progression, variety of characters, jazzy music.
Feeling the post-binge disappointment as I realize I’m caught up and will have to wait for the the other 8 episodes of season 3 to drop (thirteen total, 5 out now). Please help by linking the show’s discord—I’ve been trying to find it. And would also love other recs!
