Cross play help

bought the game for a friend on steam cus they dont have console i however am an xbox player but we couldn’t get the crossplay to work?? they tried to invite me amd i tried to invite them tried reloading the game but every time it would just say like network error,thought maybe it was cus they were brand new so they played a solo game just fine but then it kept giving the same error when we tried to set up the party again

and then they got banned??? confusion they are literally brand new what-
