Can’t remember a certain character.

I read this novel years ago and just remembered a certain character that was trapped in an illusion that made him go through different lives where he is destined to suffer and die. I can’t for the life of me remember who it is. I think it happened in an arc where there is a sect in the clouds or something? I couldn’t find it by googling or the wiki. Can someone else who read it fresh remind me please?
