Yelled at by a student
A few weeks ago I was subbing for a middle school English class. During attendance two students were standing in the back and loudly wrestling with a big stuffed animal. One of the students was a problem student I’ve had in the past, so I kindly asked if one of them would come sit at a desk closer to the front because I knew this would be a problem for the rest of class.
The student asked why they had to move. After saying that the tossing around of the stuffy was going to be a distraction, she continued to loudly say that she had refused to move unless I stopped lying and told her why. I told them that they could either separate like I asked, or she (the student arguing with me) could go down to the behaviour room. She chose the behaviour room.
At the end of the day as I was cleaning up, she knocked on my door, then stood in the hallway to yell at me and call me a liar. She also broke down in tears. I know that she’s young and was obviously having a bad day, but I’m so worried about going back to sub for this school and triggering her or having another incident with the student.
How do you handle returning to schools/classes where a student you’ve had to discipline reacted poorly?
