Her Acceptance Speech got me Balling
I'm one of these people that is totally out of the loop. So when I first heard of Kim Petras, it was only after her Grammy win, and it was only after America had learned that the first trans woman to get a Grammy. That was simply an amazing time. Her recognition meant a lot to me, even though I was living my life stealth amongst cis people, I felt proud of who I am because of her, and what she had achieved in life felt life affirming. I was secretly gloating even though cis people were going around saying "They only gave it to her cause she's trans. It really should've hone to ***** < insert your favorite female artist here>
It always gets divisive whenever a transgender person accomplishes anything in life, cis people will always judge us as if we have no agency and we just have to live with their opinions and perceptions. Truly no different than misogyny. When they silence our voices, when they refuse to see that we exist, when they mock us and troll us , this is nothing but an incel playbook. This is what it feels like to live in a heteronormative world as a transgender. In these trying times I think that we should remember that we've had positive feedback and recognition, that it wasn't always as it is now. Here's to Kim Petras, Honey Dijon, Jake Zyrus and others like them. If there's one thing they can't do is stop us from creating art and sharing it with the world. Fuck all of them, we are not going anywhere.
