But did they die?! - Crazy Ending!
Wow. That ending was wild—and exactly why I love this show. They weren’t kidding when they said they’d keep messing with us and making us second-guess everything. No matter how much we theorize, they always throw in a twist that changes everything.
Let’s break down some key moments (not in order):
Simon’s Fate
I don’t think Simon is actually dead. He’s the one who truly understood how body-switching works, so I think he willed himself to the other side while still alive. But… it could have also been an accident. He was emotionally at his lowest, desperate to save Maddie, and that vulnerability might have caused him to cross over unintentionally. That could explain why the school went wild with spirit lights.
Janet & Wally’s Decisions
I was shocked that Janet didn’t cross over, but it makes so much sense. It completely flips the story—she’s calling the shots now, and she wants answers before she leaves.
As for Wally, we see his door open… but then the scene cuts to Maddie. I really don’t think he crossed. He still wants answers, and he’s probably still connected to Maddie. That could mean she’s not completely separated from the spirits at Split River.
Maddie’s Scar
This was one of the most heartbreaking moments. It hit especially hard for me because I’m currently dealing with my MIL’s addiction, and this scene captured the reality of it so well. Yes, addiction isn’t something people can control, but as Maddie’s mom pointed out, that doesn’t erase the hurt it causes others. That weight was holding Maddie back.
More People Are Seeing Spirits
Xavier’s dad finally believing him was a huge moment. He even almost told Maddie’s mom. And now Xavier can see ghosts—but only at the hospital, and only Maddie’s dad, the spirit who directly impacted him. That makes me think Maddie might still have a connection to the spirits at school. I would love to see more of the living team, start seeing and communicating with the spirits. Makes it seem like the avengers assembling lol.
Have the Roles Reversed?
It feels like everything has flipped. Maddie, who was once the bridge between worlds, might now be on the outside looking in. Meanwhile, Simon, who spent the entire series searching for answers, could be the one caught between life and death.
Janet taking control while Martin loses his grip is another major shift. She’s stepping up, and he’s unraveling. Who actually holds the power now? And what does that mean for the spirits still stuck at Split River?
The Show’s Bigger Picture
From the beginning, I’ve thought the school was a spirit portal. The biggest clue? Split River. Then in Season 2, Episode 1, the ghosts mention the River Styx—which in mythology is both a goddess and the underworld river that separates the living from the dead. I honestly think Maddie/Simon is a version of Styx, a bridge between both worlds. Or inspired by the myth.
Final Thoughts
I love this show, and I need a Season 3. There are so many unanswered questions, and I just want to see these characters find happiness, get their answers, and move on when they’re ready.
Now I have no idea what to do with my Thursday mornings! 🤣
What are your theories?! Let’s hear them!
