Looking for beach town/city in northeast

My wife and I lived in NYC for a while. currently we live in the south finishing a graduate degree. Next year we plan to move somewhere else to settle down and have kids.

Our criteria is that it must be a beach town/city (as close to the beach as possible) in the northeast, with a lively downtown, and good public schools.

Looking for houses less than 1 mill.
