Owning hamsters vs owning rats?

So I've only owned hamsters but I'd like to get my own mischief one day.

I love/keep hamsters because I'm usually awake when they are. I've heard that rats are also crepuscular, like hamsters, so I'm considering them as a future pet. From what I know they're like puppies; mostly willing to learn and generally chill if you give them enough stimulation.

Is my research right? I'd appreciate constructive criticism over bashing me for being misinformed since I don't currently own any rats. I'd love to own a group of rats one day and any advice on best practice is appreciated
