Success metrics for professors
Lately I’ve been wondering what it means to be successful as an academic professor (research and teaching). Not everyone will end up at R1 institutions, with massive citation counts, be highly influential, and obtain massive grants. What does it mean for those who don’t achieve all that? What if you’re not at a good university, and don’t have tons and tons of citations. What metrics should one use to be successful but still happy about one’s career. Of course this will be different for everyone and different fields, but I was wondering what metrics people would use to define success. Of course it’s possible to not have any metrics and simply enjoy each day on the job too. Academia has a tough “publish or perish” lifestyle, but there will always be people in the middle, publishing just enough not to “perish” — how do they feel and what do they consider good enough.
