Trying To Get An Apprenticeship

Hey guys,

I am trying to get into plumbing and start an apprenticeship and as I had read before starting getting that first apprenticeship is, well, brutally difficult for those without a solid connection to a master plumber.

I live north of Boston & have been cold calling plumbers for several weeks now to no avail.

Here is my question. I have a friend who is a journeyman and had mentioned in the past (before I thought about changing careers) that I could do some work for him if need be. Him being a journeyman I know I won’t get any hours to use towards my apprenticeship. But does having experience help me get hired as an apprentice? If you were a master plumber would this be something you’d find redeeming enough to take someone on as a first year apprentice? That’s assuming my buddy let’s me actually do shit and not just simply carry tools and hold lights (although I do know there would be a lot of that).

I don’t want to waste my time. I don’t have 2 years to work in a warehouse to build connections. That’s been a piece I’ve heard a lot lately. The free Advice is great but I’m not interested in doing something just for a glimmer of hope of being able to do it. I know life isn’t fair and nobody is forcing me to do this. I just know I love to work with my hands, I love to help people, and I can’t stand office jobs. And sure, the money is motivating too.

Thank you for any advice you guys can provide!
