Another tip: SWE isn’t a great choice rn
Who am I to say? Well coming from someone who’s in a swe (software eng) program has lots of related experience in the field from internships, ecs, tons of side projects, etc.
The industry at least at the entry level (around 5 yrs of exp.) is cooked.
For everyone saying “oh but I wanna go into swe to earn lots of money” you’re honestly better off becoming an artist or something because I can assure you finding a job in this industry right now is like finding affordable housing in Toronto.
Don’t waste your energy, money, and most importantly your time on getting into a swe prpgram (unless it’s something insane like MIT) and then regret it after.
ESID (every situation is different) but I can very much tell you the field is extremely saturated. The US was an option however you’re kind of cooked due to how easy it is to outsource or how replaceable you really are in this industry considering the ability to find a replacement literally anywhere on LinkedIn.
That’s another thing: go onto LinkedIn and check if there even positions available and if so how many applicants applied. Nearly every job has over 100 applicants in a couple hours let that sink in.
The salary? It used to be pretty darn good. As someone who knows someone working in what I’d say is a pretty good sftw company in Canada they’re not earning even remotely what people think they earn.
So this was for everyone who still had the notion that swe=good money. I had no say in which career I got to choose (Asian parents lmao) but hopefully you’re considering other options. Heck I think even I’m going to leave the field after I finish the degree.
