For what reason does the US ban prostitution/sex work?
This is definitely going to show my ignorance on the topic but I was always under the impression that prostitution was so stigmatized and illegal in the US because of the Christian values that are heavily weaved into the country's early laws and ideals. At least that was what I believed until I realized how a lot of western European countries which both were, and still are, quite religious (even fucking ITALY which houses the Vatican) not only have prostitution as fully legal (some ban brothels, etc though) but are also in general more lax about sex and nudity. So this made me think what are the actual reasons prostitution/sex work are illegal in the US? Is it the values of some Christian sect in the US? Is it just societal values that randomly developed early on and never faded?
Please forgive me if I've misunderstood something. As might be obvious, I have no idea what's exactly going on when it comes to this topic and as a result I also had a ton of trouble finding info online (admittedly my googling skills also just suck ass in general). I'm also just a fucking dumbass on these kinds of topics
