Why is x THE "porn letter"?

I cant think of a reason why x of all letters was chosen for this purpose (like for x-rated, xxx on porn sites, etcetera). And its even weirder because I have never seen any other letters used for the same purpose of denoting explicit sexual content. Is there even a reason beyond it was randomly chosen and happened to stick?
