Join me in taking down illegal signage from our public green spaces
I've gotten into the habit of taking down one "bandit sign" every day or two during my morning walk, and walking it to a trash can. Why?
- They're illegal. (Yawn.)
- They are litter; they're no different from leaving fast food trash on the ground. They end up in the bayou, in the street, laying in the grass for months on end, etc.
- They're ugly. We're bombarded with enough advertisements every day. Our public green spaces should be clear and beautiful -- even the plain ol' neutral ground.
- When the signs are gone, the metal wires pose a very serious tripping danger to people who are jogging, especially in the dark.
- One sign is a magnet for more signs. When I see a new one pop up in a space that was clear, there are often three more there within a week.
Are these signs one of the top problems New Orleans faces? Of course not. But the 15 seconds of effort to remove one and trash it makes my morning walk a little prettier, so why not do it?
Edited to add: I do no touch political signs, as those are allowed/tolerated -- although the campaign is required to remove them after an election, and they often do not. More info in the comments.
