DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (nvlddmkm.sys) Crashing Mainly in Monster Hunter Wilds – Any Fixes?

Issue Overview:

I’ve been experiencing DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (0x133) blue screens while playing Monster Hunter Wilds. Interestingly, I don’t really get crashes in Cyberpunk 2077 or other demanding games, which makes me think this is a game-specific issue with NVIDIA drivers rather than a general GPU problem. Although I did recently have 1 blue screen while playing R.E.P.O.

The BSOD always points to nvlddmkm.sys, which is the NVIDIA display driver. The crash happens after playing for a while—sometimes in 10-15 minutes, sometimes longer. I’ve tried various fixes, but the problem persists.

My System Specs:

GPU: RTX 4090

CPU: Intel Core i5-13600KF

RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz

Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI ATX LGA1700

Power Supply: Corsair 1000 W

OS: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit

NVIDIA Driver Version: Currently 572.70 but I have tried older versions

What I’ve Tried So Far:

- Reinstalled NVIDIA Drivers with DDU (Safe Mode).

- Tried different NVIDIA driver versions (latest + older stable ones).

- Disabled all overlays (GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, FireStorm, Discord, etc.).

- Checked GPU temperatures with HWMonitor—temps are normal, no overheating.

- Ran FurMark GPU stress test for 30 minutes—no crashes outside of Monster Hunter Wilds.

- Set NVIDIA Control Panel settings to:

  • Power Management Mode: Normal
  • Threaded Optimization: OFF

- Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS).

- Turned OFF DLSS & Ray Tracing in Monster Hunter Wilds.

- Tried running the game in Borderless Windowed instead of Fullscreen.

Despite these changes, the game still eventually crashes with a BSOD, while other GPU-heavy games run without issue.

What I Need Help With:

  • Has anyone else had nvlddmkm.sys BSODs with Monster Hunter Wilds?
  • Are there any specific NVIDIA settings or game settings that fixed it for you?
  • Could this be a bug with the latest NVIDIA drivers or a game patch?
