Best way to find an apartment

Hello All. My husband and I will be moving to Markham soon from another country and are looking for a 1 bedroom apartment. What is the best way to do this? Should we work with a realtor and have someone (friends) go checkout the apartments for us or should we wait till we land and see the apartments ourselves before committing to anything? Also, would it be best to manage the process on our own rather than working with a realtor? TIA
