Would you take a job offer (50k comp increase), but you'd be going from full remote to 100% in office/travelling?
- Details: Job offer in "Tech". Going from fully remote to either in office everyday or travelling (anywhere from 25%-40% travel....but probably more closer to 25% than 40%). Will also going from internal work to client facing work.
- Pros: Going from 150k to 200k is a very big bump. I'll also get to work with software/technology that I have much more interest in than the stuff I work with currently. Will be a good learning experience.
- Cons: Their will be a lot more pressure to get things done in an urgent manner. The WLB will almost certainly be worse (I have good WLB now). One could say the company culture leans towards "toxic", though it depends on the position tbf. Even though I'll enjoy working with this new tech more, it will be more difficult as it is new to me + I'll be expected to hit the ground running. Actually a bit surprised they sent me an offer, but suppose they are confident I'll be able to pick things up quickly etc. Lastly, the job reviews on glassdoor have been very hit or miss, either saying they enjoy the work & experience vs. "Stay far away".
- Personal: 32 year old Male. Currently renting + paying off student debt. I have a partner, but we are still a few years away from marriage. No kids or pets.
- Overall thoughts: This would be a great learning experience, and would help me get back on my career track. I've been doing work that I haven't enjoyed for 3 years (but the WLB and team is so great I've stuck with it). My major concern is that taking this position could cause me a lot of stress (tougher deadlines, longer hours...would be going from a solid 40 to 50-60, and I really want to stay working in a remote/hybrid environment). I would say even if I take it, I would potentially leave after 1 year, and take all the experience I learned to find a more laid back job.
Any thoughts, questions, or things for me to think about would be greatly appreciated!!
Edit: I have been fully remote for the last 5 years, so this has become the new normal to me.
Edit 2: I was 100% travel in my last in person position before the pandemic. I did not like it, but tbh I was almost always travelling / sleeping out of hotels (Leave 5am Monday, get back 10 pm Thursday).
