ROL help (Jacobi vs University of Hawaii vs SUNY Downstate vs Highland)
I would appreciate advice/insight on my ROL list. I am a US-IMG with avg Step scores, 3 publications. Although it is a competitive field, I would love to pursue Cardiology and practice academic medicine. My hometown is in Bay Area, CA and I want to go back in the future (does not have to be soon). In no particular order:
1. University of Hawaii
Pro: university program, in-house cards fellowship, fellowship matches tend to go to West Coast
Con: not much research opportunities, location ranks 3rd on this list
2. Jacobi AECOM
Pro: great fellowship match rate, some research opportunities at Montefiore
Con: location ranks 4th on this list, fellowship match rate may be inflated with residents who already have home country subspecialty training and research experience, fellowship matches tend to go to East Coast
3. SUNY Downstate
Pro: university program, great location, some research opportunities at the university or Memorial Sloan
Con: low salary, rumors of hospital closing, low ABIM pass rate, too large of a program and program leadership is less hand-on
4. Alameda Health System - Highland Hospital
Pro: least toxic of the 4, GREAT location (hometown), resident union and wellness, supportive program leadership, most residents are from Bay Area and after graduating end up practicing in the Bay Area
Con: lower fellowship match esp for cardiology, less chance of getting into academic fellowship program, affiliation with UCSF is weak therefore less research opportunities
Can't have it all haha but I would appreciate any advice people have. Thanks!
