Honest Thoughts Hours: Your feelings on…Hríd?

Well, at least he’s not dead. Now what?

So, let’s talk about the first man to have the honor of “not dead” aside from Alfonse. Ok, so the first time we hear of Hríd is when he tries to solo Múspell like he's a one man army. Little did he know that he is, in fact, a minor male character in a gacha game and will therefore be unable to complete such a feat. He even managed to escape by outsmarting Laegjarn. I gotta admit, that was pretty fun. And of course, it’s nice to see he clearly isn’t a Gary Stu like Ephraim. But…after we meet him, he just gets sort of…dull? The writers basically gave him nothing to do once his moment was over, and from then on, his purpose seemed to be ruling Nifl so we could keep hanging out with Fjorm. He’s a “big brother” sort of character who has that protective aura, he’s supposedly brash, but after everything is said and done, he loses what made him interesting. And besides, at this point we have multiple big brothers in feh, so that can’t be a defining feature either lest we start describing someone else. He’s serious, which, again, is something a number of characters already are. He cares about his kingdom. Guess what? So do the other characters. And, this may be unpopular, but I feel like if he weren’t one of the only surviving guys, he’d be more forgotten. Hríd went from a less perfect Ephraim to a watered down Alfonse. And I’m not saying Hríd’s introduction was groundbreaking or anything, but in the world of Feh, it would have made him distinct at least. Maybe even good with some fine tuning. He’s a little boring as of late, which is a shame because he could’ve been better with a little more investment.

As for his design, well, he’s got the issues I have with Nifl in general. His outfit does the bare minimum in acknowledging the snowy aspect of Nifl, he’s got that tealish outfit, the excessive gold accents, the damn feathers. And honestly, his outfit is way too similar to Fjorm’s, especially with the pauldrons, tunic, and striped sleeves. I think his physique is nice though for how he’s presented, and I like his face. I do really like his hair. The main color is almost like a faded purplish brown with blue highlights? It’s honestly an interesting choice and looks quite nice. The style evokes his brashness that we are introduced to, which makes his subdued character later on more unfortunate.

Hríd sadly is kind of a let down when it comes to Feh characters, dead or alive. But he does his job well enough despite not being around very long and I do feel kinda bad for the guy. Hríd gets a 4.5 ranking. His character lost the potential he could have had, and aside from some nice details, his design is lackluster. I feel bad he doesn’t have a cipher card though so here’s half of his official calendar. Sorry Hríd, but at least you’re alive. Cherish it.
