Dr. Doom is a bad character
Since Dr. Doom is becoming more known in the public eye with the announcement of Avengers: Doomsday I wanted to make a lighthearted post about why I never liked him.
To start with, Dr. Doom is a textbook Mary Sue, ridiculously overpowered. Imagine if you combined the intelligence of Reed Richards, the mechanics of Iron Man, with the magical prowess of Dr. Strange, you’d get a rough outline of Doom’s skillset. Out the gate, that’s super busted but to add on to it, he’s the fascist leader of a fictional country called Latveria, in which he somehow turned into a utopia (idk what Marvel was trying to say with that) which gives him diplomatic immunity from prosecution. Oh and he has an army of futuristic robots that can copy many of his abilities. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Doom is some random fan’s AO3 character the way he’s written.
In the current comics continuity, not only does he have all that, he’s also sorcerer supreme AND literally conquered the world, somehow for the One World Under Doom series, making all the governments cede power to Latveria.
I get that comic characters can get stupidly power creeped, but I struggle to find a Marvel character more consistently glazed than Dr. Doom. Personally, I think many of the reasons listed above make Dr. Doom a boring character that has been largely, culturally irrelevant for most of his existence, relegated to cartoons where his powers are shooting green blasts and building robots.
