Sick of being scared of my cat

RESOLVED! <3 thanks for all the help. the ONLY thing that has helped my aggressive cat’s behavior was another cat for him to play with and run around. he is still not a ‘friendly’ cat, but he is so much happier now!

Hi fellow cat lovers, I’ve had my cat for about 2 years now- I found him in the road when he was just weeks old. As he’s gotten older, he’s begun attacking me unprovoked. This includes pouncing multiple times once I try and get away from him and leaving deep scratches, as well as jumping onto me and biting down as hard as he can, often breaking skin. I tried googling this and everything on the internet says “oh it means he’s done being petted now” so let me be clear: he acts aggressively towards me when I have NOT been petting him. Example: I got ready for bed and laid down to go to sleep and went to go turn on my alarm for the day. He pounced on me claws out from the floor and bit down on my arm very hard. So when I say unprovoked, I mean completely unprovoked. I will be cooking dinner in the kitchen and he’ll decide to run up and attack me aggressively out of no where. I’m sick of being scared of my cat and I love him so much and don’t want him to hurt others. How can I stop this behavior?
