Whitney’s documentary?

  • Apologies for the length of this post, I was stoned but unable to sleep last night!

Whitney as esteemed movie director? 😂

Has anyone heard of or has watched the documentary that Whitney made? It’s this critically panned fashion documentary about Halston (ULTRASUEDE: IN SEARCH OF HALSTON ) and the quotes from the reviews were hilarious because EVERY single one complains that Whitney is the worst. I guess he is onscreen for most of it and makes himself the topic a lot, much to the annoyance of said reviewers 😂 I find him so off-putting and pretty lame imo and let’s not forget his old band, Renob…🥴

For some reason, I’ve compiled some scathing quotes from the top critics reviews! Sorry for the length but reading up about his movie made me cackle. Btw, it’s got 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is especially pretty bad for a documentary. I almost want to watch it because it sounds so bad but I need to be extra high for it.

  • I found the movie streaming for free on the Tubi app if anyone is a masochist!

Here’s some of the critics’ reviews:

  • “I want to believe that Whitney Sudler-Smith, the director and camera-hogging "presenter" of Ultrasuede: In Search Of Halston, is some kind of Bruno-like parody of a fashion victim. He's too gloriously, self- importantly inept to be real, surely?”

    • Wendy Ide, Times (UK)
    • “It's unfortunate that director Whitney Sudler-Smith seems to have spent more time on his own hair than his interview prep.”
    • Sara Stewart, New York Post
    • “A ghastly vanity affair for one Whitney Smith, the son of a socialite who, despite minimal credits to his name, feels entitled to make Halston's story his own.”
    • Eric Hynes, Village Voice
    • “All the ingredients are here for another juicy fashion insider film, but this Halston portrait is diminished by a clueless fame whore determined to wedge himself into the story.”
    • David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
    • “Sadly, what could have proved to be an enlightening and substantive documentary... is instead a poor man's regurgitation of newsreels and magazine glossies fueling a filmmaker's ego.”
    • Debbie Lynn Elias, Behind The Lens
    • “[It's directed by] an unknown amateur named Whitney Sudler-Smith who looks a bit like Julian Assange and seems almost surprised to be making a film at all.”
    • Anthony Quinn, Independent (UK)

-“Sudler-Smith spends so much time documenting Sudler-Smith trying to ineptly document this story that one immediately begins to wonder if it's all some sort of strange joke.” - Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist

Here are a few of the audience reviews:

-“Had to turn this off halfway through...I was so embarrassed for this Whitney Sudler-Smith who was so unprepared to interview these icons and legends. How the hell did he get these interviews in the first place? ( I am sure Andre Leon-Talley was wondering the same thing.)”

  • “One of the worst documentaries ever. The film maker, a pseudo Burt Reynolds, driving around in a ridiculous trans am with his hair doing trans colours is un-prepped, un-interesting and a gooph. Standing outside the Halston home in the rain is the hi-light of this dull epic. How he garnered interviews with some of the celebrities is beyond any scope of reason. But to arrive unprepared is downright shameful. What is worse is the lame telling the story of a man…”

  • “Vanity project for porn-stached Trans Am driving Whitney Smith. If your're going to make a movie about Halston then focus on Halston, not yourself. Who wants to watch you interview your mother about you?” (So he interviewed Patricia?🤣)

  • “What a waste of an amazing subject! Who the f*ck is Whitney Smith? (that's rhetorical, I know who he is, he's NOBODY) and why did anyone associated with Halston agree to do this, knowing what an empty vessel Smith is?”

  • “Way too much Whitney Sudler-Smith in stupid-ass wigs detracting from the interviews with some supercool people. Kind of a clunky documentary that doesn't dig all that deep...Hard to get past the ubiquity of the director.”

-“Possibly the worst documentary I have seen in four decades. Liza advises this fame-whore to do some research. F*t chance. He asks elementary questions as if he just landed from another planet. He interviews his mom for insight as to why he may be drawn to this subject. She doesn't have a clue, noting he liked "Smokey & the Bandit" growing up, something we already have guessed due to the endless ground shots of him getting in and out of his souped-up Trans Am.”

  • “Its a shame the story of Halston had to share time with Sudler-Smith's ego.”

  • “Who is this spoiled narcissist who takes a great and rich subject like Halstom and abuses it, abuses his access to these incredible figures in fashion and Halston's life, and captures it all with terrible camera work and editing?”

  • “I don't know much about the person who made this Halston documentary, except that his hair color kept changing throughout the interviews.”

-“Director Whitney Smith is deplorable in this documentary by driving around in a 70's Pontiac Firebird trying to be chic in 70's clothes and wigs.”

  • “Ghastly Creep makes film about Ghastly Queen”

Anyways, if anyone’s seen this garbage, what’d ya think!?
