Restaurant recommendations? Cole Valley & surrounding area?

Hi all, I’m looking for a restaurant recommendation for a birthday dinner. My favorite kinds of cuisine are Japanese, Chinese (dumplings) Indian, Mediterranean (not big on red meat), and Italian (pasta in particular). I’m looking for something slightly upscale and tasty, and a fun environment for conversation. I live in Cole Valley and love love love Beit Rima, but want a place to have a comfortable sit-down family dinner of great food - open to other parts of SF too - I’m sure a lot of good food is over in North Beach, so please give me suggestions all over the city!
