Family mad I reported animal abuse.

My BIL has been whipping their young dog with a belt for defecating in the house to the point where he punctured his own hand with the prong on the belt and can’t do household tasks. My sister in law locks him in his cage with fecal matter so the dog ‘will have to smell it too’. The dog is mainly in his cage or being screamed at. I called Animal control and apparently they came to the house but did not remove the dog but are investigating. My BIL already has an animal abuse charge and is reportedly not supposed to own an animal. They ate getting rid of him now. Now the family is mad at me and I am the bad guy. Should I have left it alone? The image of the pup being tortured is sickening to me and the family believes beating/hitting dogs is not that bad- no one’s business and their personal right.
