Small group based leadership
Hey guys I just wanted to advocate and get feedback on a strategy.
I think small group discussion is super important. It gets first time protesters plugged in and it lets them speak which is great for a couple of reasons
- They may have great ideas
- You can learn their strengths and how to use them
- They feel connected and are more likely to come back (and they may bring a friend)
If you host a protest and mainly fill your time with speakers and a march none of that happens.
It also simplifies organizing. it doesn't take too much planning or organizing to tell people to break into small groups and start talking (for maybe an hour or two).
From there I think we should be electing leadership. Occupy wanted to be a leaderless movement but I think the reality is that millions of people can't talk to each other. there isn't time. I think leaders are an inevitability but they ought to be selected from small groups where everyone can speak as an individual. Typically leadership is chosen by whoever grabs the mic most fiercely and that needs to change.
My proposal is groups of 18 and 3 reps (selected with ranked choice voting) those three reps join other reps to to form new small groups of 18 that then elect their own representatives. By the time you have 10 layers of this you have a pyramid of 131 million people.
Representatives are responsible for staying in communication with their representatives and keeping them informed about future events.
This creates a system that can pull ideas from the whole group while also giving top leadership a way to inform the group of future events.
I'd love to hear your thoughts
